Career and choice are inseparable twins. Career that is imposed is no more career. It becomes a task from task-master. You must love and cherish what you will choose as career. Parents sometimes choose for children because of prestige attached to some career, especially medicine and law. There are thousands of careers to choose. A young student has the right to choose career under a flexible guidance of counselors, parents and professionals. Why do you need to choose your career?
1. If you do not choose, others will choose for you
Choice is personal. When choice becomes impersonal then there is imposition. We take decision daily for survival and anyone who fails to do the same will be left behind or be helped with decision without his/her consent. Your parent is waiting for your choice. Also, the school wants to know. You cannot sit on the fence on career matter. You must take the lead first before others can assist. If not, you will go for what they dream for you. There is a renowned musician in Nigerian who wanted to choose music as career but the parents said “No, it is Veterinary Medicine”. If you do not prove yourself mature and competent to choose, anyone will choose your future as they think it should be. Be smart and be prepared to take the lead first.
2. There is problem to solve
Every assignment has a problem to solve. So also every career has societal problems to solve. Mechanics solve car problems. Dentists solve tooth problems. Lawyers solve legal problems. Accountants solve tax and monetary problem. Have you ever asked yourself questions that x-ray your career? You are born to save your world and generation. God has qualified you to be a perfect solution to someone. Your choice of career should be able to solve difficult situations in your time. This is the issue of life-purpose. You need to choose a career that will gladden your heart when unfortunate lives are saved, society is restructured and generations call you blessed. Today in our world, we keep celebrating Dr. Ben. Carson, Neurosurgeon doctor, who detached and restored life to conjoined twins. We are waiting to celebrate someone again. I know it is you. Do not choose because your friend likes the career. We live to solve diverse problems. Choose yours now.
3. To avoid confusion
Fusion of two things that are not compatible is called confusion. Confusion is not good for a future-minded student like you. Sometimes, our minds tell us we can do this, we can do that. Yet there is only one that you are born to do. When you are confused, do not choose in rash, rush or in haste. Consult your parents, counselors or professionals on careers. Be sure of your choice before developing yourself on career. Note this: it is painful to invest all strength and might in an assignment and one later discovers that it is a wrong one. The strength consumed already cannot be retrieved. It is hurting. Avoid futuristic confusion.
4. Human is insatiable
In the study of human beings, the economists and psychologists agree that we are insatiable – no one can satisfy human beings. We have short span of interest on many things. Choose your career with keen interest of long term span. You can.
5. Personality goes with a specific career
God is a perfect God. He created us with uniqueness that will help in choosing and developing career. Personality traits/skills are inborn and natural without pressure of duress. Some are introverts, extroverts, extremists, friendly, analytical, calculative, caring, reserved, observant, problem solvers, questioners, etc. Know yourself and choose rightly.
6. To create diversity
If everyone is a doctor, who will keep money for everyone in the bank. If everyone is an engineer, law court will be locked and right of others will be denied. There is need for diversity. Career development can be in the class of medicine, law, engineering, building, education, science and technology, aviation, military, journalism, accounting and banking, carpentry, transportation, trading, pastoring, administration, etc.
7. For self-actualization
Self-actualization is the peak of Abraham Maslow theory of man's need. When all needs of life is met, then man can think of actualizing purpose for living. Self-actualization starts now. You want to be a great administrator, lawyer, engineer, sailor, pilot, trader, teacher, doctor, and so on, then dream it, study hard, choose it, and endure the training.
8. Risk management
Every career has risk attached. We choose a career that has manageable and minimal risk. Choose with help of seasoned counselors who know the 'in and out' of career you may want to choose. You need help, do not do it alone.
