In secondary school, there are three options of specialization that will lead to career choice. Most students choose wrongly and this affects their choice of career. The moment you get admission into Junior Secondary School, the plan of career starts. Do not wait till you get to Senior Secondary School classes. The moment you know where you are going, your steps in academic pursuit will change, your kinds of friends will change, the kind of co-corricular activities also will change. Let’s say you did not choose when you were in JSS class, it is still right for you to do it now and when you pass into SS1 class.
Before the school will ask you to choose a class, your career must have been defined with your God, parent and counselor. Some people drop from one class to another in SS2 when they discover that they cannot withstand the stress of the class or the choice of class is totally against their choice of career. This will waste many things. Your time, energy, passion for the previous class, interest and opportunities.
However, it is not too late even now. You can still make a right decision of career as you read further. If you want to be a doctor, surely you must be in Science class to have good foundation for medicine. If you want to be a Journalist, you have to be in Art class to learn more about Art subjects. If you desire to be a Banker, you must be in Commercial/Business class. Seek advice from your school counselor before you add yourself to any class not because your friend is there.
The current school curriculum system in Nigeria through National Educational Research Development Commission (NERDC) has regrouped Senior Secondary School into four class of specialization. They are:
Senior Secondary Science and Mathematics
Senior Secondary Technology
Senior Secondary Humanities and
Senior Secondary Business Studies
Any career you wish to study in Nigerian tertiary Institutions are grouped under these four classes of specialization. The subjects you are to study are inline with WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, UTME and other exams to gain admission to tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Please, do not omit any just because you do not like it. They are all important.
