WHAT IS CAREER?

By Allen Olatunde

From cradle to grave, the most common act of man is choice making. We take decision every day for better livelihood. On normal circumstances, a human being has choice of what to eat, drink, associate with, read, watch or wear. The choice of career is one out of many decisions we ought to make as long as we live. It is a crossroad with many links but only one is relevant to one's life. This is the time when suggestions, discoveries, observations, pressure, divinity, spiritism and self-will will fight to win the stage of your choice.
This issue of career is related to many other decisions of life like, marriage, choice of country or residential area to settle, choice of religion and faith and choice of lifestyle. However, career is the main connector to other decisions of life. If one misses it, others may not last as they ought to be.  When a matter is crucial, then it needs good attention to get to the good side with minimal and bearable risks, for every decision has risk embedded.

Career choice begins from the first year on earth when future formation begins. The child with brighter future starts from the four corner of the house. Career is who you are and what you can still be able to do. Career relates with internal and external factors of life in order to dig and fit in to the societal environment. Career can be interchanged with profession.

Career is an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress (Google dictionary). Career lasts as long as physical, emotional and intellectual strength strive. It is what you will be known for, even after you are no more. It will become a legacy for another generation through the input in your career. Career can be renamed occupation, job vocation, employment line and profession. Career is an individual's journey through learning, work and other aspects of life.
When career issue comes to you, these are the questions you must ask yourself?

1.    What do I want to become in life?
2.    What do I want to spend the active days of life on?
3.    What can I do to change and make history in my generation?
4.    What am I created to solve?
5.    Why do I need to choose this career?
6.    Am I on pressure or peer group influence?
7.    Do I have capacity for this career?
8.    Does my personality go with this career?
9.    Does my academic performance have capacity for this career?
10.    What are my strengths for this career?
11.    What are my weaknesses against this career?
12.    Are there any threats that can abort the process of achieving this career?
13.    Are there visible or intangible opportunities awaiting me after the training for this career?
14.    What is my endurance level for education?
15.    Does the career appeal to my parents' support?
16.    Is there any good citadel of learning that offers the course of study around me?
17.    Can I disregard irrelevant options for this career?
18.    Will I be able to accept the good, the bad and the ugly of this career?
19.    Will I be able to encourage others to choose this career after many years of practice?
20.    Finally, how pleasing is my choice to God?

These questions, if you answer them correctly, will define your career and give the analysis of who you are, what you are and why you are. Career is divine. It involves God who knows the end from the beginning. Career also involves your parents, counselors and professionals.

The choice of career starts initially from primary school, continues to the secondary school, especially in the senior class when choice of class will be decided – whether science, technology, business or humanities. This is the crucial time to understand what career means and how it will affect your life forever. As a student seeking guidance on choice of career, solemnly go over this chapter again and decide prayerfully what God wants you to be and to solve in your generation.

What else can I say again about career? Read this note: Sometimes you are unsatisfied with your life, while many people in this world are dreaming of living your life. A child on a farm sees a plane fly overhead and dreams of flying. But, a pilot on the plane sees the farmhouse and dreams of returning home. That's life!! Enjoy yours. (Dr. Ben Carson, retired world renowned neurosurgeon, and US Republican Presidential Aspirant.

Career is your choice. Whether up the hill or down the valley, that's your life. That's yours. Choose it. Enjoy it. Celebrate it.
