NEED FOR CHILD’S DISCIPLINE

The word discipline denotes: control of excess; guide through the lifetime career; and orderliness.

• Discipline is control that is gained by requiring rules or orders that must be obeyed and punishing bad behaviour (Merriam Webster Dictionary - paraphrased).

• Discipline is used as a career. Why? Because career involves discipline of what must be done and what must be avoided.

• Discipline is the main word that maintains dignity and order in military. No chance for lawlessness.

WHY DO WE NEED TO DISCIPLINE OUR CHILDREN?

1.       Children want to control their parents. They have scripts to act by their knowledge and feeling and they want your undisputed approval and covering.

2.       Society is becoming a free world without control on the disguises of child’s right.

3.       God gave all parents assignment to do. We must not fail Him.

EXAMPLES OF DISCIPLINE AND CONSEQUENCES IN THE BIBLE

•  Moses ran away from Pharaoh’s discipline in the palace and met stricter discipline in the desert for 40 years. What we fail to do now will still come up but with another disciplinarian who might be stricter and annoying.

CHILD’S FREEDOM MANAGEMENT

INTRODUCTION
All children are growing to do what adult can do. They crave for freedom to do it as they want. Nevertheless, the parents have roles to play in management of such liberty. Your absence is dangerous and your presence is challenging. We must manage the two. According to Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Act. 19:  “Everyone (Children inclusive) has the right to freedom of opinion and expressions; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers” (Paraphrase). Freedom of expression is rarely part of children’s right, yet it is critical for realization of all children rights. (Source: CRIN). Children have right to have an opinion different from their parents while taking into account their age, as well as their degree of maturity and discernment, children have right to have their opinion considered (Source: Humanium). This paper is not promoting independence spirit for our children as civilized worlds are. In Africa, we live collectively. Individualism of advanced countries has caused excess freedom without control due to strict enforcement of the law without culture bias or religious consent. We shall look into the diverse views of child freedom and management of this freedom scenario as responsible parents that want better future for our responsible and cultured children.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR EXAMINATIONS

All students learn, read and study to write examination. Studying for an examination should be more than just a cramming session; successful studying is an ongoing process that begins in the first day of classes and it involves managing your time and learning effectively. It also involves developing a foundation for pre-exam review. The exam supposed to show the intelligence of the students on paper. African educational system puts more effort on final exam than continuous assessment test. It is 70:30 ratios. That is why students read extensively and tirelessly for final exam. However, the strength of a student goes beyond the exam. As for you, do not read for examinations; read for life consumption. To pass examination, it starts from your mind perceptive. Some fail before they failed. Cowardice dies many times before his death. You need to believe in yourself, your reading and God. However, in my research I got some strategies to prepare and pass examinations from an online page (paraphrased).  It actually guides on examination preparations (the points were paraphrased for student’s consumptions). This site outlines several tips and strategies that students can use to enhance their studying during university, secondary or primary school time.

Wao!!! This is classic. Here is a book well written to address something very crucial to Youth and Student Ministry. Are you working with the Youth? Are you ministering to teenagers and students? You need to know The Mind of Student. One major reason why many of us in Youth and Student Ministry often mishandle our assignment is because we lack understanding of the mind of the generation we are mandated to minister to. While our brain is focusing on the right side, our “congregation” is thinking to the left. We wonder why these young people would not understand and obey simple instructions while they wonder why we are “misbehaving” and we cannot see “reality” from their own perspective. We want them to behave normal at this stage but Anna Frend says “to be normal during the adolescent period is by itself abnormal.” The generation gap is getting widened because we have not taken a conscious effort to study the operation of the mind of our target audience. This is a major reason we are losing this generation of people to other contending forces outside the church.

The Mind of Student is not just a book for student workers; it is also a useful material for students themselves. Many students are confused and take rash decisions they later regret in life. Majority of the youths cannot explain the reasons for their decisions because their minds work so fast and react so quickly to their environment to the point that they take a short time to think and disregard many factors before they rush into action. Many have been displaced today because of the wrong actions they took yesterday. With this book, young folks can have a better understanding of the working of their minds so as to take right decision at this stage for future fruitful life.

THE SECRETS OF THE BEST STUDENTS

‘Best’ is not a word in everybody’s dictionary. It is for the few who are ready to sacrifice short term for long term. They know the pain and the gain therein. If you know, you should have been above average since. Now, I will discuss some secrets with you. Not really secrets, but unveiled truths about those who lead their classes, groups, communities, nations and continents in all things they believe they can do. They never play when others are playing. In fact they never have friends without purpose. We shall look into ten proofs why some students excel in their academic pursuit to the top position in life.

1.    Approach
The approach of best students (genius) is different from other people. The genius brain works differently. Ideas are not eliminated based on efficacy or practicality. Everything is considered. Thoughts are not immediately disqualified. A genius often tries many different avenues to arrive at a desired result, rather than simply deciding which ones will work and which ones won’t.  They do not give up in time. They study hard to reach the end of any situation. They put their teachers on the run. Their approach to learning is for success and nothing more.  They are too loaded with ideas because they never stop learning, attempting and studying. Think of the creative geniuses who were high school drop-outs – Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg. Because their thinking is different, they often express the idea that standard ways of learning and teaching are not always helpful and may even be distracting, and that they prefer to learn on their own. Your approachto your teachers, classwork, assignments and examinations will determine your position among the best students. Do you prepare before examination or when it comes you run pillar to post and stillwant to lead the class? Your approach must change.

Registration for Pre-Admission Screening will commence on Friday 2nd September 2016 and will close at 12.00 midnight on Sunday 11th September 2016.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidate must have the following:

    Scored a minimum of 200 marks in the 2016 UTME for all courses except those for which higher bench marks have been specified in the University Website.
    Obtained at least five (5) credit passes at GCE O/L, SSCE, NECO, or their equivalent. The subjects must include English Language, and Mathematics (for courses for which a credit in mathematics is required) as well as three other relevant subjects at not more than two sittings, except for the MB.BS degree for which only one sitting is required.

Eligible candidates should visit the University website to complete the registration online. The University recognizes that several candidates had earlier registered for the previously scheduled Uniben Admission Screening Exercise which was subsequently cancelled by the Federal Government. For such candidates they would not need to make any further payment in order to register for this Pre-Admission Screening exercise. For other candidates who are registering for the first time, the University will charge a fee of #2,500.00 (Two Thousand Five Hundred Naira) only for this screening exercise.

All candidates are advised to click on Pre-Admission Screening Instructions and carefully read the Registration Instructions:

    On Admission Menu displayed on the left-hand side, click Pre-Admission Screening Instruction and read carefully.
    Type in your JAMB Registration Number and SURNAME in the boxes provided. Carefully type in your JAMB Registration Number as any error committed will not allow your details to be displayed.

Thereafter,

    UTME candidates should click on the Get Details button for your JAMB information;

    DE candidates should click OK button on the dialog box displayed and enter your names; and

    Click on Make Payment link to go to WEBPAY page. Note: UTME Candidates who are qualified for the courses originally chosen can proceed to make payment by supplying the required information. UTME/DE and scored 200 and above are hereby informed to log on to Obafemi Awolowo
University, Ile-Ife website (www.oauife.edu.ng) or eportal.oauife.edu.ng to participate in the
screening exercise effective from July 15, 2016.

Candidates who are awaiting results are also eligible to apply for the screening. Such
candidates will be allowed to upload their results when they are released only if they applied
within the specified period.

To commence the on-line screening, candidates are required to log on to University eportal
and click on 2016 ADMISSION SCREENING-UTME/DE APPLICANTS using their
JAMB Registration Numbers to download RRR (Remita Retrieval Reference) and use it to
pay for EPORTAL Access Charges for ICT Development (as paid by all regular students
utilising OAU EPORTAL platform) to upload necessary data and N= 1,500 screening charge
on Remita platform which accepts cash payment via branch of any bank or master card.
Applicants for the Screening Exercise will be required to do the following on the University
EPORTAL:

1. Update JAMB data
2. Upload Results (i.e WAEC, NECO, JUPEB, ND, NCE etc)
3. Upload scanned copy of credentials
4. Upload passport photograph (if not available)
5. Print Admission Screening Report

For the five relevant subjects the scores are added together to get G.

Score = (G/30) x 50 = O’level points (50)

JAMB/UTME: Jamb scores / 8 = Jamb points (50)

Add O’ level + Jamb points = Weighted Scores (100)

For 2 sittings

The first examination based on date is taken as the template for all candidates with two sittings. The deficiency from this template is picked from the second sitting but the points from the second sitting are divided by 2.

The post UTME Screening scores will be sent via text messages and e-mails to each candidate. It can also be viewed by logging in to the Admission portal with your Jamb Registration number. The cut-off points will be available on this site within two weeks.

Note: Candidates with wrong subject combinations in either JAMB or O’level results were not scored where wrong, and will be denied admission either now or later. Candidates below 50 in weighted scores will NOT be admitted into University of Ibadan.

CLASS INDICATORS IN CAREER CHOICE

In secondary school, there are three options of specialization that will lead to career choice. Most students choose wrongly and this affects their choice of career. The moment you get admission into Junior Secondary School, the plan of career starts. Do not wait till you get to Senior Secondary School classes. The moment you know where you are going, your steps in academic pursuit will change, your kinds of friends will change, the kind of co-corricular activities also will change. Let’s say you did not choose when you were in JSS class, it is still right for you to do it now and when you pass into SS1 class.

Before the school will ask you to choose a class, your career must have been defined with your God, parent and counselor. Some people drop from one class to another in SS2 when they discover that they cannot withstand the stress of the class or the choice of class is totally against their choice of career. This will waste many things. Your time, energy, passion for the previous class, interest and opportunities.

However, it is not too late even now. You can still make a right decision of career as you read further. If you want to be a doctor, surely you must be in Science class to have good foundation for medicine. If you want to be a Journalist, you have to be in Art class to learn more about Art subjects. My dear friend, you should not fall victim of some factors that can hinder in choice of class for dream career. The class you are is the basis for your career. Wrong choice of class is costly and a destiny destroyer. They are:

o    Flocking together of peers into new class.
o    Inability to interpret the connectivity of class with career
o    Shallow knowledge about the subjects for your dream career.
o    Secret agenda as students - social group, childhood friendship, flirting with opposite sex, etc.

Curiosity is common to human beings at all ages from infancy through adulthood, and is easy to observe in many other animal species. These include apes, cats, and rodents. Everyone has curiosity but the level defers. Without curiosity, we will not be able to learn. However, it can still be misused. Career is sustained by the level of curiosity of a student. We see a doctor in the hospital and we sometimes want to touch the stethoscope because we want to know it through sense of touch. Our parents fight us because we do not take permission before we operate, press or handle a gadget in the house. If you are curious to be a lawyer, it is good if it leads you to read, study and get prepared systematically but if it leads you to only admire the gown and wig without any academic effort, it is a waste of interest. As a student, you must know and control your curiosity on everything.

WHAT IS CURIOSITY?
Curiosity can be seen in different ways. Let's learn together. Curiosity is a healthy desire to know or learn more or faster than expected. It is also a desire to know about people or things that do not concern one; nosiness. It is an object that arouses interest, as by being innovative or extraordinary. It is the brother of impatience and complacency. The act and art of tempting or testing what is forbidden or disallowed without much detail. Curiosity is being forward as the result of inner push. It is the additional step of knowing or doing something ahead of others. Curiosity (from Latin curiosus means "careful, diligent, curious," similar to cura "care") is a quality related to inquisitive thinking such as exploration, investigation, and learning, evident by observation in human and many animal species. The term can also be used to denote the behavior itself being caused by the emotion of curiosity. As this emotion represents a thirst for knowledge, curiosity is a major driving force behind scientific research and other disciplines of human study.

Success indicator on career choice still flips back home. You cannot become what you have not been in the house. Charity begins from home. Your parents/guardians are your natural coach, instructor and guide on matter of life. Career is life. Parent/guardians do not want their child/ward to venture into what can ruin their lives. Therefore, the advice is to deliberately seek counsel from them and wait for the response. Do not fight back on their response. Do not insult them. God sometimes uses parents for their children to stop a wrong move, to guide rightly or to kickoff progressively into success.

School community consists of the principal, vice principals, HOD, teachers, students and you. Everyone knows your academic and potential performance. What you know - knowledge. What you can do - ability. What you prefer most - choice. All make you. Everyone has preference based on personal interest and value. Your uniqueness must not be traded away in career choice. You can admire others but do not lose yours. The point of uniqueness starts when everyone applauds you for an activity. Your uniqueness can win or lose. It is not a total failure, that's your uniqueness. Whenever you make progress in what you know best, do not laugh but smile. Whenever you fail despite your effort do not cry but be frank. Sit down and research why you progress so that you can monitor and master the pace. Your failure also needs investigation to know the weak point to be strengthened. What others do and fail, you can do it and be successful. Do not compare yourself to lose taste of your uniqueness.

When I was born, my parent rejoiced, for a unique child arrived. I grew in my own way. I talked as I wished. So you too. Let not one frustrate you against what you are and can be. Your ability to manage your uniqueness is an indicator of career success. Ask yourself these questions:

There is one thing that everyone needs to possess to change himself, environment, choice, beliefs, value system and actions. This is knowledge. Knowledge is known as information. And information is formed by the numbers of data you get from reliable sources. Knowledge can be sourced for through learning. Learning can be achieved through habitual reading culture. This is an act of gleaning data and information from written books. When you sit back to learn from others that are dead or alive, far or near in a solitude and readiness to change, you learn more.
    Why do you need to read? Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists and to make his life full, significant, and interesting” (Aldous Huxley). Your mind is a gift from God loaded with the ability to store unquantifiable information. However, it remains dormant until it is stirred with the right materials in the right direction” (Ben Carson). “If you want to hide something from some black people, put it in a book, they will never read”. Do you agree with this statement? Although human being can learn in many ways, it has been proved that books are the best source for acquiring knowledge. Reading is a means of seeking knowledge (information) through the written word on books, journals, magazines, eBooks and newspapers. Developing a reading culture has become very important for any society in the 21st century.

Career choice is measured by the end result in the future. There is peak in career when self-actualization or regret may set in. Your choice of today will determine the result of tomorrow. In Nigeria and beyond, some careers have been lucrative and selling in the labour market. If you choice a career because you love it without considering the economic returns, you will be frustrated later.  What are the factors to consider before choosing career for futuristic success?

1.    Societal trend and relevance
There is always a paradigm shift of interest in the society. People do prefer career because it is recognized. Whenever the relevance is dropped, everyone talk less about the career.

2.    Demand in labour market
Labour market is big and wide. Everyone in the market wants to sell and gain. When a career earns big, people will rush into it. Before in Nigeria, nursing was not lucrative but now the season of relevance has come and young ladies want to be nurses because the take-home is handsome. How lucrative a career was, is and will be must be considered before choosing one.

3.    Solution provider for society
Non-monetary value of career to society also matters in choosing one as a student. I said it earlier that you are born to solve problems. Problems await in the future for wrong choice of career while the right choice goes along with solution. Your relevance in the career goes with solution to long awaited problems in the society.

Nigeria is a blessed country with universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education. The sector has structure for career development. However, not all tertiary institutions can really help your dream career. The schools differ in past glory, tuition, ownership, structures, lecturers, equipment, facilities, learning environment, leadership, social and economic life and location. Our schools are loaded with good and bad elements that can make or mar your career. It is left for you to choose where to go. These questions will help. They are personalized.

o    Where is the school located?
o    What is the attractive things that lure me to this school?
o    What are the amenities she has for learning?
o    How affordable is the school in monetary term?
o    Does she have unbroken years of study without labour strike? If not, why?
o    What is the economic life in the school?
o    Does she have successful product in the career I want?

FIVE LEVELS OF CAREER CHOICE - PARENTAL-SUPPORT LEVEL

Having good academic performance and the best personality trait without support, career development may be slow, can scatter or die naturally if support is no where to be found. Every student has support advantage of parents from cradle till youthful and useful age. This support level must be understood before choosing a career. If you choose a career that your parents reject, support roles will not be there. With these questions below, test your parents-support level.

o    Do you have supporting parents/guardians?
o    How supporting are they from cradle?
o    Do you support yourself sometimes?
o    Do you have good relationship with your parents/guardians?
o    Do they choose a career of their choice for you?
o    Do you have idea of bills to complete the training for the career?
o    How buoyant are your parents/guardians?
o    Have they promised to support you to any level of education at all cost?

FIVE LEVELS OF CAREER CHOICE - PERSONALITY LEVEL

This is a step forward from school to you. Who you are cannot be adulterated overnight. Personality trait is exceptional. There are school of thoughts on personality development. Some look at man with temperament principles, while others on perception and rationality. Personality trait has uniqueness by gender, genetic factor, environment, exposure, status, etc. Some are extroverts (they can express themselves freely in speech and action without considering external factors of crowd, intimidations, fear, gender, etc.) and introverts (they are reserved and calm, not always at ease to speak for or being spoken for). Understand yourself to choose career. If an introvert student chooses law as a career, he/she may find it difficult to withstand intimidation, crowd, embarrassment, loss or inconvenience. That doesn't say introvert cannot study law. However, such a person would have discovered him/herself earlier and try hard to adjust to the demands of the career. Nevertheless, the personality trait does a great work in growing career. Here is another acid test for your personality that produces structure for successful career.

o    Are you pleased whenever people talk about your excesses and shortcomings?
o    Do you think before you talk or talk before you think?
o    Do you love to relate with people at first sight?
o    How social are you to friends and strangers?
